Anna Govert: ‘Why didn’t Kara get to have a classic Arrowverse romance on “Supergirl”?’

From Culturess:

It’s perfectly natural for Kara to long for a partner for herself, yet the show refused her only viable option. During season 5, Supergirl shot down the possibility of a romance between Kara and William after a single date, and Kara’s other love interests had both been written off the show in previous seasons. Due to the process of elimination, it was Lena or nothing.

And they chose nothing....

As unfortunate as it is, we just have to call a spade a spade here: Kara wasn’t allowed a final love story because her only viable option was a woman. It’s extremely upsetting that this is still the reality in 2021. Especially because the series built so much of itself on the heavy-handed queerbait weaved into every scene Kara and Lena had in the series.

Amrie Cruz: ‘The “Supergirl” sapphic kiss was a fan edit — but should’ve been canon’

From Preen.ph

Kara Zor-El’s story has come to a close with the CW’s Supergirl finale. However, it has left some fans unsatisfied after the potential romance between [Kara] (Melissa Benoist) and Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) wasn’t made canon. It seems that history has repeated itself as fans called its showrunners out for queerbaiting. While reminiscent of what went down after the CW’s Supernatural finale, the SuperCorp shippers may have gotten the last laugh this time around. It’s all thanks to an edited kiss.

One Supergirl fan edited scenes from the show’s final episode to create an image of Zor-El and Luthor kissing. The photo has since gone viral along with an edited “leaked” script to support the claims that an actual kiss was shot but eventually cut from the final episode. The edits were so well-made that a number of online publications (such as Just Jared Jr.) were convinced of their authenticity — much to the amusement of the fandom.

Kayla Laguerre-Lewis: ‘Queerbaiting in “Supergirl”: More than just missed chances’

From The Good Five-Cent Cigar:

“Of all the friends I have ever had, you have pushed me the most, challenged me the most. You’ve made me a better person. Thank you,” Kara Danvers tearfully told Lena Luthor towards the end of the Supergirl series finale, which aired on Tuesday, Nov. 9.

With this line, the writers sealed the fate of not only [Kara and Lena’s] relationship but also a huge part of how the show will be remembered. After six seasons, 126 episodes, one network change, a spinoff and more, the legacy of Supergirl will always be tied to queerbaiting....

[Q]ueerbaiting is not just when two same-sex actors play characters that have chemistry with romantic potential and the writers ignore it. The problem isn’t that fans don’t want to accept Supercorp as a female friendship because that’s all they were written to be. No, the problem with Supergirl is that the writers saw the chemistry and leaned into it, all while insisting that there was nothing but platonic feelings between them.

From making their friendship the focal relationship in season five to constant visual and screenwriting parallels between them and other canon relationships (most notably, Clark and Lois in all of their different iterations, or the fact that Iris and Barry’s wedding vows on The Flash were taken directly from an early Supercorp scene) to single Kara’s constant pleas and assertion that she wants to find a romantic partner, followed by scenes of her intimate friendship with Lena, the queerbaiting on Supergirl was next level.

Disha Kandpal: ‘Unconfirmed Pics of Supercorp Kissing Leave Fans Emotional’

From HITC:

Since, Thursday, November 11, pictures of ‘Supercorp’ — a.k.a. Supergirl and Lena Luthor — ‘allegedly’ kissing are going viral on Twitter.

At this point, every Supergirl fan is dying to see Kara El Zor [sic] and Lena Luthor kiss on the show. The fandom has shipped the two leading ladies for far too long, as a result of the constant sparks flying between them.

Moreover, the showrunners have come very close to actually giving us a kiss scene between them. But at this point, it has become more like a carrot hanging on a stick.

Alex Zalben: ‘Should the “Supergirl” Finale Have Made Supercorp Canon?’

from Decider

If you ask pretty much any fan of The CW’s Supergirl, which finished its run after six seasons tonight with the episodes “The Last Gauntlet” and “Kara”, the question “should Supergirl have made Supercorp canon?” is a stupid one, at best. The fan ’shipped coupling of Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist) and Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) has overwhelmed almost any other conversation about the series since the latter character was introduced in Season 2. But — and this is an important distinction — the question is whether Supergirl should have made Supercorp canon in the final episode, and the answer to that is far more complicated.

Unlike her brother Lex (Jon Cryer), Lena was never really evil. A Luthor, for sure, but with a complicated morality. The series quickly set up the dynamic between Kara and Lena as allies, both connected not just though shared interests but (though they didn’t know it) by shared secrets. Lena always had some sort of scientific schemes going on in the background, while Kara wasn’t just a mild-mannered reporter at CatCo; she was also Supergirl.

The two also shared an undeniable chemistry, one that launched a deep analyzation of the show by fans looking for clues to whether the duo were supposed be just gal pals, or perhaps something more romantic was in the offing. Do a search for Supercorp on any social media platform and you’ll find the requisite slo-mo ’shipping montages set to weepy music, side-by-side with deep dives into how specific shots and exchanges on the series parallel not Lex Luthor and Superman in other media appearances, as you might expect, but Lois Lane and Superman.

Toni Sutton: ‘Will Kara Danvers and Lena Luthor End Up Together by the Series Finale of “Supergirl”?’

From Distracitify:

Unfortunately, the DC Comic-based television series Supergirl will be coming to an end with the conclusion of Season 6. The final season began airing earlier in 2021 but went on a short hiatus in May and is now back starting with Episode 8 on Aug. 24. There are so many loose ends to tie up before the series finale, one being the relationship between Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) and Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath)

Since Lena Luthor first appeared in Season 2, her relationship with Kara Danvers bloomed into a best friendship. It’s been apparent that the two of them have an easy chemistry and bond as two powerful women in their personal and working lives. From the very beginning, the relationship between Kara and Lena has been a fan favorite, despite many highs and lows throughout the series.

On the show, Kara and Lena’s relationship is presented to viewers just as friends, but many fans have been wanting to see Kara and Lena become more than friends and enter into a romantic relationship. With not much time left, fans are hoping they will take their relationship to the next level. They even have their own ship name: Supercorp. So, will they end up together? Will Supercorp live?
